My Time At Tiffany's Gene Moore & Jay Hyams english Book
by Gene Moore & Jay Hyams

As a Manhattan window designer for more than 25 years, Moore can take credit for putting belly buttons on mannequins and for placing kissing rhinos underneath a Valentine's Day heart. The originality with which he created these confections raises certain expectations about his prose, and Moore, with freelance writer Hyams, for the most part proves equal to the task. Regrettably, though, about a third of the way through this memory book he switches from telling a charming personal tale to cataloguing the windows themselves (Moore designed 16 a week for 16 years for Bonwit Teller, then one every other week for Tiffany's). "Make people stop" was his motto; his means were passion, intrigue, mystery, the elements that make for good theater--which did not exclude feathers, ice cream cones or pasta as building blocks for visual fantasy. A schooling in the fine arts, a prodigious gift of whimsy and a romantic spirit all come to the fore in this entertaining remembrance.

Gene Moore was a true visionary--and while the phrase "creative genius" has become a hackneyed, over used descriptive for much of the mundane that goes only slightly beyond the norm, it is somewhat apt for the work of Gene Moore, the man who styled Tiffany windows in the 1950's and made them so distinctive, people often lined up simply to see them. The window spaces themselves have not changed over the years; they remain exceptionally shallow. Through innovative use of perspective, Gene Moore transformed these 5 tiny windows so that each appears deep and never ending. At first glance, the display might appear one way--and then, upon closer inspection, there would be a surprise: i.e., a tiny haystack might lean against a bird, its beak extended, pulling ---- hey, that's not a worm, that's a diamond necklace! His designs also appeared to defy gravity at times--eggs seemingly suspended in air, while balancing an enormous perfect river white diamond, that sort of thing. He created 'faux watermelon slices' using emeralds and rubies, deep blue sapphires for seeds and much more. It is a visual treat to thumb through his designs and it's great fun to read how he developed his mini theatrical productions, as he also describes the interesting day to day business of this iconic store, which was considered a shopping mecca for old money, long before the proliferation of charge cards.
